On the eve of what looks set to be a big win for the anti-EU United Kingdom Independent Party, the resident eurosceptic tabloid, the Daily Express, has a shocking story about how the EU plans to “scrap Britain”.
The story begins (emphasis ours):
SENIOR Eurocrats are secretly plotting to create a super-powerful EU president to realise their dream of abolishing Britain and other nation states, the Daily Express can reveal.
So what’s happening? Well, it turns out that the Express has heard some reports that the EU is planning on merging the roles of Herman Van Rompuy, president of the European Council, and Jose Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission — a big and important change.
But the way that the Express describes it is masterful:
Opponents fear the plan could create a modern-day equivalent of the European emperor envisaged by Napoleon Bonaparte or a return to the Holy Roman Empire of Charlemagne that dominated Europe in the Dark Ages.
At present, the two senior EU bureaucrats, Mr Barroso and Mr Van Rompuy, are locked in a bitter power struggle to determine who is the true big cheese or “grand fromage” in Europe.
It takes a UK Conservative MP, Douglas Carswell, to point out the real risk:
“My worry is that the president will end up having the charisma of Van Rompuy and the economic management skills of Barroso.”
