Michelle Obama is catching some flak for having her picture taken at a Target department store in what critics contend must have been a deliberately staged photo-op.On Friday, pictures of Mrs. Obama emerged showing her wearing a disguise and shopping at a Target store in Virginia. As the Washington Post noted today, those photos, taken by an AP photographer, raised some suspicion among Republican commentators that the event was planned in advance.
Fox News host Sean Hannity tweeted, “First Lady Michelle Obama shopping at Target with an AP photographer in tow . . . . planned? I think so.” And on his radio show, Rush Limbaugh said, “What a phony-baloney plastic banana good-time rock-and-roller optic photo op.”
Usually, candid photos come from a White House photographer who tags along on such outings. But because the photos in this case came from an AP staffer, Obama’s critics alleged that some sort of coordination must have been in play.
For their parts, neither the AP nor the White House have said how the AP photographer knew to find Mrs. Obama at that Target store.
