South Australian senator Cory Bernardi, who quit the Liberal party in February to set up his own conservative party has recruited Victorian upper house MP Dr Rachel Carling-Jenkins.

Fairfax Media reports Carling-Jenkins will defect from the troubled Democratic Labour Party and become the party’s third sitting MP.

It comes just days after Bernardi applied to register the party in Victoria ahead of next year’s state election.

According to Fairfax Media, further defections in Victoria and possibly NSW are anticipated.

Nationally Bernardi’s party has broken the 10,000 mark for memberships, equivalent to the number of Liberal Party members in NSW.

The Australian Conservatives party is considered a threat to the NSW Liberals as the splinter group gains momentum.

Carling-Jenkins, who has a background working in welfare and social sciences, reportedly wants the conservatives to unite nationally to effectively prosecute their causes.
