Apple Had Some Crazy Ideas For Your iPad's Smart Cover

Patents, while they certainly don’t always lead to a completed product, can offer a cool glimpse into what a company potentially had in mind for a product in the future.

Now we learn¬†via Gizmodo¬†that Apple was (at least at one point) entertaining the idea of tricking out your iPad’s Smart Cover to display images and respond to input.

Here’s a look at the patent that was uncovered this morning.

It would look pretty much identical, but the outside could display notifications...

...and the inside is totally reworked to display other images

It looks like a new type of connector would help tell the cover what to display

It could display a short status message...

Or operate as a media controller...

Or even provide users with a touch-sensitive keyboard

And graphic designers would love having an on-the-go drawing tablet for their iPads

Despite all this new functionality, it would still maintain the slender profile we love
