There’s not exactly a dearth of college football bowl games, making for less than compelling television. We know the main driver of all these bowl games played by barely-.500 teams is ESPN, but outside of the BCS games and other January staples like the Cotton Bowl and Capital One Bowl, does anyone care to attend these glorified exhibitions?
Turns out not so much. Here are the numbers for a few sparsely attended bowl games this season:
New Mexico Bowl – 25,672
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl – 28,076
Beef O’ Brady’s Bowl – 20,072
San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl – 24,607
Military Bowl – 25,042
Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl – 29,878
It doesn’t exactly help when schools like Temple (located in Philadelphia) are being sent to play in New Mexico.
