CNN has canceled Eliot Spitzer‘s show In the Arena, reports The Daily’s Hunter Walker. It will be replaced in the 8pm by Anderson Cooper’s AC360. Brian Stelter reports that Erin Burnett will take over the 7 p.m. time slot on weekdays and John King, the current 7 p.m. anchor, will move to 6 p.m.

rumours have been circulating for a while that Spitzer’s show In the Arena was in trouble, and unlike similar rumours about John King USA CNN did not go out of its way to stamp these out.

In February Spitzer allegedly pushed then-co-host Kathleen Parker aside after the show continually posted weak ratings, and it was subsequently re-named In the Arena.

However the show has continued to struggle, and many saw the hiring of CNBC powerhouse Erin Burnett in April as a sign the network might be getting ready to reshuffle its evening line-up.  As it turns out that’s exactly what happened.

Something else to consider?  This frees Spitzer up to run for NYC mayor next year.

Update: In a statement Spitzer says “We provided diverse & valuable perspectives during the show’s tenure. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at CNN.”
