Christine Hemming, the wife of Liberal Democrat MP John Hemming, has told a court she has no recollection of breaking into a woman’s home in Birmingham and stealing her kitten, The Telegraph reports.
Emily Cox, who was having a long term affair with the MP, has not seen the kitten, named “Beauty”, since the incident in September 2010.
Christine Hemming told Birmingham Crown Court that she had intended to drop her husband’s possessions at the house following their separation, but entered the property after realising a door was unlocked.
‘I had no intention of stealing a cat – either before I went to the property, when I was at the property, when I left the property, and subsequently.
”I didn’t know there was a cat in the property… I have no recollection of taking the cat, and I tried my best to return the cat when it dawned on me that I had it.”
CCTV images showed Christine Hemming entering the property and leaving with the kitten under her arms, the BBC reports.
UPDATE: Christine Hemming has been found guilty of stealing the cat, reports The Daily Mail.
Also, footage of her sneaking into the house and taking the kitten has been released:
