Reuters broke the news this morning of a spy scandal that China and the US have been keeping under wraps for months.Toward the beginning of the year, China arrested an aide to a vice minister at the ministry of state security for allegedly passing information to the CIA.
“The destruction has been massive,” one source tells Reuters, referring to the loss of Chinese secrets.
This scandal throws a new light on recent tensions, like the blind activist who escaped to US custody. It is seen as the biggest US-Sino spy scandal since 1985, when intelligence official Yu Qiangsheng defected to the U.S.
The name of the alleged spy will probably come out later. For now here’s a guide to China’s secretive government workings.
