When Derrick Rose crumpled to the ground at the end of the Chicago’s opening playoff game, the immediate reaction by most was that the Bulls’ season was over. But there is one stat that says the Bulls are still one of the best teams in the NBA, even without Rose on the court.During the season, the Bulls outscored their opponents by an NBA-best 8.2 points per game. In the 39 games with Rose this season, they were even better, outscoring the opposition by a whopping 8.7 points per game.
But, in the 27 games without Rose, the Bulls still outscored their opponents by 7.6 points per game. That would have been the best mark in the NBA. The San Antonio Spurs (+7.2 per game), were the second-best team during the regular season.
And at +7.6 scoring differential without Rose, the Bulls were still 1.6 points better than the second-best team in the East, the Miami Heat (+6.0 per game).
Of course, nobody is saying the loss of Rose won’t hurt. With Rose, the Bulls were 32-7 (.821) and without him they were 18-9 (.667). But without him, there is still plenty of reason for hope in Chicago.
