Earlier today US authorities in China released escaped blind activist Chen Guangcheng to Chinese authorities, ending what looked to be a major diplomatic situation between the countries.Various reports have suggested that Chen agreed to stay in China after threats were made against his family.
However the specific threat is perhaps more horrifying than we might have thought.
Zeng Jinyan, a close friend of Chen told the Telegraph that the blind activist had received threats that his wife would be beaten to death if he left the country.
Today AP spoke to Chen at hospital in Beijing. Chen told them that it was the United States who relayed the threat to him. He has apparently made a deal with the authorities where he will “receive medical care, be reunited with his family and allowed to attend university in a safe place”.
However Chen told the AP he was worried for his safety and wanted to leave the country.
Right now the US climb down is looking pretty awful.
