Ramzan Kadyrov, the Chechen leader and strong supporter of Vladimir Putin, held a lavish 35th birthday party for himself, despite previously saying that any government employee that gave him a gift would be fired. The Telegraph reports that the celebrations coincided with the 193rd anniversary of the city of Grozny. Kadyrov flew in Belgian movie star and martial artist expert Jean-Claude Van Damme and British violinist Vanessa Mae to join in with the party in the city’s centre which was bedecked with portraits of the birthday boy. Actress Hilary Swank also reportedly attended.

Last week, the Moscow Times reported that Kadyrov, who has a reputation for a lavish lifestyle, would punish any gift bearers during the celebration.

The newspaper also reported that Shakira was due to perform during the festivities, though Kadyrov said that the Colombian star withdrew due to concerns over the human rights reputation of the region. Shakira reportedly says she was never hired.

It is unclear whether anyone lost their job during the event.
