CHART: More Than Ever, It's A Two-Horse Race In The U.S. Smartphone Market

Almost 90 per cent of U.S. smartphones run either iOS or Android. According to the latest comScore numbers on market share, Android and iOS accounted for 87 per cent of U.S. smartphones in August, up from 71 per cent a year prior. 

However, this level of consolidation is starting to worry some industry observers. Verizon CFO Fran Shammo, for example, said on a recent earnings call, “I do think, though, it is important that there is a third ecosystem that is brought into the mix here.”

As we discuss in our mobile platforms report, it’s not clear that a white knight is in the cards at the moment. Microsoft is basically dead-in-the-water until it rolls out Windows Phone 8 later this year. Amazon is an intriguing option, but its much rumoured phone is really just that at this point– a rumour.
