After a 34-0 thrashing and a third-straight underwhelming performance from Mark Sanchez, the calls for the Jets to start Tim Tebow have arrived. There’s a solid chance it happens at some point this season if Sanchez continues to struggle, but it won’t happen next Monday night. Here’s why:
- The opponent. Houston is undefeated and has one of the best pass defenses in the NFL. They’ve made all four quarterbacks they’ve played against, including Peyton Manning, look bad. If the Jets decide to turn to Tebow, they want to drop him into a situation in which he has a chance to succeed.
- The injuries. The only three playmakers the Jets have — Dustin Keller, Stephan Hill, and Santonio Holmes — are injured. Any QB is going to struggle when your guys can’t get open. Once again, it doesn’t make sense put Tebow in a situation where he has to succeed against one of the best defenses in the NFL when he doesn’t have any help at all. Keller and Hill could be back in a few weeks.
- The stage. Starting Tebow on Monday Night Football against an undefeated Texans team is great for drama, but needlessly raises the stakes. If the Jets, for example, start Tebow in week six against the Colts, he would have the chance to make mistakes and play his game with little blowback. But throwing him into the fire on Monday Night would maximise everything he does, and set him up for failure.
If Sanchez keeps playing this poorly, the Jets will eventually give Tebow a shot.
We originally thought that the Jets would insert Tebow as an overreaction to Sanchez not being an elite QB. But after four weeks, Sanchez has played so poorly that turning to Tebow might be the best rational move.
Sanchez is last in the league in completion percentage, 29th in yards per attempt, 29th in passer rating, and has more turnovers (6) than TDs (5).
So yeah, he’s been awful, but starting Tebow this week is just about the worst thing the Jets could do.
