Challenger: Layoffs Fall To A 10-Month Low

Planned layoffs fell to 37,800 in March, reports Challenger, grey & Christmas.This is an 8.8 per cent drop from the same month a year ago.

It was a also a 27 per cent drop from the 51,728 announced layoffs in February.

“Both consumer products and transportation saw fewer job cuts in March after experiencing heavy cuts in February,” wrote John Challenger.  “These are key indicators of the economy’s health, so they will be closely monitored in the coming months for more signs of distress. The hope is that the February surge in these sectors was not indicative of a trend.”
