Baltimore Ravens cornerback Cary Williams was lucky to stay in the game after shoving an official during a scuffle in the second quarter last night.Technically, you’re supposed to get ejected if you touch a referee. But they let it slide.
After the game, Williams addressed the fight and had some strong words for the 49ers. Here’s what he told Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun:
“To me, I feel like the 49ers are pretenders. They’re fake tough guys. You got to play football. We do it physical and we do it between the whistles. They were diving on piles, shoving people from behind. They can try to pretend they’re physical, but we really are.”
He also said he didn’t know it was a ref:
“I didn’t know it was a ref. It was just a reaction. It was a scrum. I feel bad about the situation. It was just a reaction. That’s not the way to act. I just wanted to protect my teammates.”
Calling someone a “fake tough guy” is a played-out cliche at this point. The reality is not no one on either team really wanted to fight and get ejected last night. They went through the motions to keep up appearances, but ultimately the scuffle defused itself.
Here’s the push. Williams is #29 to the right hand side of the screen:
