Dane Caroline Wozniacki defeated Simona Halep of Romania last night in the women’s final of the Australian Open 2018.

The win saw Wozniacki take out her first grand slam and claim the world number one ranking – for the first time in six years.

It was a close match as the pair slugged it out on a hot night in Melbourne.

Both women called for a medical time-out and the heat rule came into effect which saw both players take a 10-minute break, but it was Wonziacki who came out on top, winning 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-4 after nearly three hours on the court.

Roger Federer will now face Marin Cilic on Sunday in the men’s final match.
