Snowmobiler Caleb Moore died this morning at age 25 after crashing at the X Games a week ago, his family announced. He suffered a concussion from the crash, and later had to have emergency surgery when bleeding developed around his heart.
Yesterday, the AP reported that there had been a complication involving his brain.
The crash came during the snowmobile freestyle competition last week.
Moore under-rotated on an attempted back flip, his snowmobile got stuck on its front skis, and he was thrown in front of the 450-pound machine.
It is the first death in the history of the X Games, but it wasn’t the only major injury at this year’s competition. A snowboarder fell on his neck attempting to do a triple backflip off a 75-foot jump. And Moore’s younger brother Colten separated his pelvis in a snowmobile crash.
