In an interview with CNN’s Candy Crowley, tea-party favourites Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain repeatedly dodged questions on whether they believe Mitt Romney is christian. The front-runner, who is Mormon, came under fire from Dallas pastor Robert Jeffress, a backer of Texas Gov. Rick Perry, for not being Christian on Friday at the Value Voters Summit in Washington.
Crowley asked each question if they believed Romney is a Christian, and both candidates refused to answer the question.
Cain said he is “not running for theologian in chief,” while Bachmann said that “to make this a big issue right now is just ridiculous.”
Crowley asked both candidates if they were aware they had dodged the question — and both said they were OK with that.
The question is unlikely to go away, especially as Romney maintains his position at the top of the GOP field.
