Burger King is hoping to take a bigger bite of the fast food market with retooled chicken nuggets and a handful of limited time offerings. The Miami-based fast food chain, which re-launched as a public company in June, has been putting real pressure on McDonald’s for the first time in years, in part by adding versions of products already available at the Golden Arches.
Burger King reported same store sales for the quarter ended September 30 up 1.4 per cent. Oak Brook-based McDonald’s posted a 1.9 per cent third quarter gain, but same store sales slipped in October and rebounded in November. The rare drop for the world’s largest restaurant chain has had experts pointing to better competition from Burger King and Wendy’s.
“As we move into 2013, we are focused on continuing to deliver best-in-class products to our guests,” global chief marketing officer Flavia Faugeres said in a statement. “Our new limited-time menu options give guests even more delicious reasons to visit Burger King restaurants in the New Year.”
Burger King’s new chicken nuggets are now made from white meat and dredged in a “crispy, tempura-style batter. “The crispier nuggets replace ‘chicken tenders,’ which rolled out in 2009.
The nuggets accompany a handful of limited-time offers that might not be suited for many New Year’s diets: A Whopper with avocado and Swiss, cheese-filled tater tots, Philly chicken sandwich, an Italian chicken sandwich breaded and coated with marinara and cheese, and a molten fudge sundae.
