A Bulgarian archaeologist has uncovered centuries-old skeletons that were stabbed through the heart and chest with metal rods.Archaeologist Bozhidar Dimitrov said Bulgarians from the Middle Ages stabbed the skeletons to protect living residents from vampires, the Associated Press reported.

Superstitious villagers believed those who did evil during their lifetimes might return as vampires.

But hammering an iron rod through the deceased’s chest could prevent their return as blood-sucking demons.

Bulgarians have reportedly stabbed corpses as late as the beginning of the last century, according to the AP.
