The Chinese women’s table tennis team is on the verge of breezing past Japan for the gold medal in the team competition.China hasn’t lost a single match in the final, and it’s been a foregone conclusion that the Chinese would take gold since the Olympics began.
The most interesting tidbit from the final, in fact, is that the British commentators on the BBC refer to paddles as “bats.”
A British co-worker also confirmed that British people call them “bats.”
So the game is officially called “table tennis,” but the paddle is neither a paddle nor a “racket,” but a “bat.”
