Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi, best known in the US for her roles in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and House of Flying Daggers, is planning to sue a Hong Kong news agency that reported she had been paid for sex by the disgraced Chinese official Bo Xilai, according to the Chosun Ilbo.32-year-old Zhang also flew from mainland China to Hong Kong in what many say is a move to refute rumours she has been banned from leaving the country by officials investigating Bo, WantChinaTimes reports.
We saw the reports at the time, but thought that it was probably too ridiculous to be true — allegedly Zhang had been paid for sex with Bo 10 times between 2007 and 2011, and had earned more 700 million yuan ($110 million) by sleeping with senior party officials.
Now that report appears to be gathering steam. Apple Daily, the Hong Kong-based tabloid being sued, chose to republish the rumours yesterday, prompting Zhang’s PR backlash.
It still sounds completely ridiculous to us (we can’t imagine she needs the money — her last boyfriend was the extremely wealthy venture capitalist Aviv Nevo), but given that Bo has already involved the murder of a British man with espionage links by his wife (who may have been his lover), the playboy son who takes out Huntsman daughters on dates in unspecified cars, the torture and murder of enemies in Chongqing, wiretapping the Chinese president, and the vast overseas fortune… well in some ways a sex scandal with a movie starlet seems almost logical at this point.
