Penn State Football Coach Bill O'Brien's Salary Will Jump 57% Thanks To A $1.3 Million Gift From One Wealthy Donor

Bill O’Brien has decided not to bolt for the NFL and will stay at Penn State for more than one season. And according to David Jones of, O’Brien will remain with the school thanks in part to a $1.3 million donation from one wealthy booster.Sources at Penn State told Jones that the donation from donor Terry Pegula will be added to O’Brien’s salary, raising his total compensation 56.5% to $3.6 million in 2013. Pegula was an active member in the recruitment of O’Brien to Penn State following the dismissal of Joe Paterno.

O’Brien said as recently as late November that his “plan” was to stay at Penn State. However, O’Brien confirmed to Jones that he “entertained overtures from multiple NFL clubs.” When asked, O’Brien did not deny that he used those discussions as leverage for unspecified “structural and personnel changes” in the school’s athletic department.
