Microsoft released its Windows 8 preview yesterday and is gearing up for its general release. Windows 8 is a significant break from previous versions. It is a “two-in-one” system developed to be both attractive on tablets and maintain its strength on PCs.
It’s an aggressive and very risky move, but it’s easy to understand the reasoning. We estimate that tablets will reach almost 500 million units a year by 2015, and will be on par with PC sales the next year (and we think IDC may be underestimating the impact of tablets). Microsoft had to take this more or risk being left in the dust, but it is not without its risks.
