Nothing says “happy birthday America” like a massive display of fireworks.
While some cities have cut back on the extravagance due to budget cuts, others are moving full speed ahead with decadent shows that can cost several million dollars.
We’ve rounded up America’s most extraordinary fireworks displays, from New York to California.
NEW YORK: Macy's sponsors one of the largest fireworks shows in the country. This year's spectacle on the Hudson River will use 40,000 shells and performances by Katy Perry and James Taylor.
PHILADELPHIA: This year's fireworks extravaganza, which takes place near the Philadelphia Art Museum, will feature music by guests Earth, Wind and Fire, among others.
BOSTON: The Boston Pops fireworks show on the Charles River uses four barges and lasts for 21 minutes.
LAKE TAHOE: Tahoe's show, the largest synchronised fireworks display west of the Mississippi, has around 100,000 spectators annually.
SAN FRANCISCO: The fireworks display at San Francisco's Pier 39 are seen by around 600,000 spectators.
ATLANTIC CITY: This display lasts nearly an hour, with one segment illuminating the skies in the Marina District, and another along the coastline near the boardwalk.
