The political world is in the midst of watching the most predictable flip flops in the history of flip flops…At some point, probably soon, Barack Obama will probably come out and say he endorses gay marriage.
Obama already supports civil unions, and he’s against banning gay marriage, so some might prefer to say that Obama’s position is “evolving” but whatever, this is a flip flop, since at one point he was actually opposed to it.
Anyway, the way everyone is watching Obama’s position “evolve” is embarrassing, and actually it’s worse than with Romney’s flip-flopping, since at least Mitt Romney surprises you.
So for example, I was genuinely surprised when Romney indicated that he deserved some credit for the salvation of the US auto industry, since previously he did an op-ed saying that he thought Detroit should go bankrupt. That was a very surprising flip flop!
Or take Mitt Romney’s flip-flop on abortion. Who would have possibly expected that it was a debate over stem cell research that would cause him to have such an about-face on the issue? That really makes no sense whatsoever.
Mitt Romney really surprises you, both in his flip flops and his reason for them.
Obama’s evolution is telegraphed from a million miles away, and everyone has to pretend that it’s genuine, and not a matter of mere political expediency.
