Banksy has posted a video explaining his painting that self-destructed right after selling for almost $2 million

The artist Banksy has posted a video on Instagram explaining his stunt involving a painting that self-destructed moments after selling at auction.

“Girl With Balloon”, one of Banksy’s most famous works, was sold at Sotheby’s for just over £1 million ($1.93 million). Moments after the hammer fell, half of the painting was shredded by a device built into the frame to the shock of the auction crowd.

His Instagram video shows the shredding device being loaded into the frame, with captions explaining: “A few years ago, I secretly built a shredder into a painting … in case it was ever put up for auction.”

It shows footage from the auction floor and the bewildered faces of the onlookers as the shredding device activates. The post is captioned: “The urge to destroy is also a creative urge – Picasso.”
