Ever since we posted a story about why a banker (such as yourself, perhaps) are needed in Shanghai, we’ve gotten lots of feed back from readers asking one question:How exactly do you get a job in Shanghai?

So we started poking around the internet looking for  information and job openings. Here’s the low-down.

Our friends and Mergers & Inquisitions tell us that finding a job in private equity is almost impossible if you’re not from China because its a hyper-local market. However, there are possibilities in investment banking, accounting, sales and trading because they’re more international positions. So, you should focus your efforts in those areas unless you speak perfect Mandarin and have amazing knowledge of China’s business landscape.

That said, what’s the best way to do it? Contact China-based alumni from your University. Check out bank websites for job postings-especially the one you already work for to see if you can make an internal transfer. (FYI: If you work for HSBC, you’re in luck- they plan on expanding despite China’s economic slowdown, according to Shanghai Daily.)

Also, check out websites like Fins and eFinancialcareers (like we did) to find jobs and get a sense of the lay of the land. We’ve included a mix of both Chinese and Western here companies to start you off.
