Australian ride sharing startup RideSurfing is expanding its Sydney-based network to Australia’s west coast this month.

Choosing to expand into Perth before it launches into Brisbane or Melbourne is a strategic move, co-founder Manu Dupont told Business Insider.

“For us we’re a startup so we have to choose wisely,” he said, adding the decision was driven by the business’ ability to attract the right team members and the “massive need for affordable transportation.”

“It’s a massive pain point to move around because there’s a lack of public transport options and on-demand transport options,” he said of Perth.

Dupont also speculated it’s probably only “a matter of weeks” before Uber launches its ride-sharing service Uber X in the WA capital.

“I believe there is space for a lot of players and I know that Australia is a very interesting space for ride sharing,” he said.
