Suspended Auburn point guard Varez Ward is being investigated for potential point shaving by the FBI, Yahoo!’s Charles Robinson reports.Ward has been suspended for “violating team rules” since Feb. 25. Robinson says that coaches contacted the FBI after they became aware of the possible point shaving in late February.
“Point shaving” is when a player sabotages his team on purpose so they don’t cover the point spread, ostensibly because he has money on it.
According to Robinson, two such games are under scrutiny.
In one game, Ward played poorly and committed numerous turnovers and his team didn’t cover the spread.
In the other, he came out of the game with a dubious injury, but his team ended up covering.
Auburn is a four-point underdog against Mississippi tonight.
