Don’t call her a clairvoyant and whatever you do don’t compare her to Miss Cleo.Famed astrologer Susan Miller, who has a business degree from NYU, finds this talk deeply offensive.
“What I do is scientific,” Miller said over lunch. “Astrology involves careful methods learned over years and years of training and experience”
Miller has built an empire from her “scarily accurate” predictions. She writes for a dozen magazines including Elle and Vogue Japan. She also is a best-selling author. Her site Astrology Zone has six million visitors every month.
She answered some of our questions about astrology and building a business:
Business Insider: What is your typical day like?
Miller: I tend to be up and working for about 20 hours a day. I am always writing horoscopes short and long, or working on my books. I also do television appearances.
Business Insider: What are some misconceptions about astrology?
Miller: That it’s totally crazy to use it to plan your life. There are so many things we don’t understand in the world. What if 200 years ago someone had said that these metal barrels in the sky would get us around the world in a few hours? Or that we’d inject ourselves with mould to treat illnesses? People are so sceptical.
Business Insider: When did you know you’d be an astrologer?
Miller: When I was 10, my mother told me that I was going to be a writer but that my biggest success would be in a new form that wasn’t known to us yet. When I had a meeting with AOL about the internet years later, I knew that this was what she had meant. They hired me and I began writing for them.
Business Insider: What’s one of the biggest predictions you made that came true?
Miller: I saw that Apple was going to make it even when the company was flailing back in the late 1990’s. Steve Jobs was a Pisces, which means that he had incredible creativity. The company itself is Aries which means it has playful and open-minded characteristics. I saw that they’d have new product development that would change the world.
Business Insider: What are some things people might find surprising about what you do?
Miller: What I really do is run a business that’s all about my customers. I’ve lost out on money just to keep astrologyzone.com free and I spend a lot of time writing my books and forecasts. I’m not someone who has her head in the clouds–I am always working.
Who is your typical customer?
Miller: I have customers all over the world! People in every country and region are really interested in this. One unlikely group of customers I’ve had in recent years are professional men from 25 to 45-years-old. In these uncertain economic times, astrology is more important than ever!
Could you sum up astrology in a few words?
Miller: At its simplest, astrology represents mathematical cycles of when to act and when to hold back.
