Ashley Graham can’t stand a particular term.
The plus size model told Elle that she dislikes the phrase “real women.”
“You know, I don’t like to use the words ‘real women,’ honestly. I like to use the word woman. And I say that because there are so many women out there who are naturally thin, or are naturally curvy, and I think when we start putting a label on the type of woman it gets misconstrued and starts to offend people. At the end of the day we just all want to be known as women or models or actresses or whatever,” she said to the website in an interview discussing her latest campaign for NYDJ.
Graham has modelled for a variety of major companies, such as Forever 21, Target, and Swimsuits For All. Last year, she made waves when she appeared in a campaign for Swimsuits For All that was featured in Sports Illustrated. She also has a lingerie line for plus size women, Ashley Graham for Addition Elle.
She’s been a huge leader in the movement for retailers to embrace women of all sizes.
“It feels good. It feels like it’s supposed to happen. It feels like, ‘alright, we’re making progress.’ And there are very large companies like NYDJ who are taking notice of women with curves, and not only making clothes for them, but including them in the campaign, because that’s exactly what the average woman wants to see. She wants to see herself in a campaign. She wants to see what she’s going to look like in the jeans, and also be celebrated throughout all of this. So, I think it’s amazing, yet it’s supposed to be happening,” she said to Elle.
“”I really, truly believe beauty is beyond size,” she said to Business Insider this past summer. ” And I use that hashtag — ‘ sexy is a state of mind,’ and your sexy is different form my sexy but as long as your finding that inner self love then… then that’s what this is all about. That’s really truly what my message is — finding self love within yourself and not comparing yourself to others because there’s no such thing as perfection, because perfection doesn’t exist.”
