The new Apple TV, the company’s digital living room “hobby,” seems to continue to sell well at Amazon. Much better than its predecessor, at least.
The $99 Apple TV is currently the #10 best-selling electronics device at Amazon. It is consistently in the top 8-15 whenever we check, dating back to last November, and sustained during the busy December shopping period.
We don’t know what Amazon’s gadget sales volume is like, but it’s something.
And people are using the new one. Even in late January, Netflix said that the Apple TV had passed the iPad in viewing hours — despite more than 10X more iPads in the field than Apple TVs.
That’s good news for Apple. And all the more reason to think it will continue to invest in the digital living room.
Perhaps an Apple TV App Store will be its next project — or at least Apple could upgrade its box by adding some more streaming entertainment sources, such as Major League Baseball’s MLB.TV, Pandora, etc. (And, who knows, maybe someday Apple will sell actual TVs.)
Meanwhile, it’s not just Apple’s digital video box performing well on Amazon: A similar device, the $80 Roku box, is #8 right now, selling better than the Apple TV. And the $100 Roku box is selling even faster among “digital media devices,” but doesn’t show up on Amazon’s broader electronics best-sellers list. (Perhaps there is a secret reason.)
