Apple’s big software update for iPhones and iPads may not be available until much later in the year, but reports already indicate there may not be major feature additions and overhauls for iOS 12.
Instead, Apple is expected to focus on security and performance improvements in iOS 12, according to Axios. Many of the major feature additions and upgrades Apple had planned may be delayed until 2019.
Here’s what we know about iOS 12 so far:
iOS 11 was plagued by a number of security issues and other bugs, which made users consider reverting back to an older software version
Some of the software bugs in the first public version of iOS 11 included issues with AirPlay, Touch ID, Face ID, and device touchscreens. Users also reported battery drain, lag, and bugs within Siri and other stock apps.
Apple devices were also among those affected by the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities, which were discovered in early January.
Though Apple sent out patch updates to address the security flaws, iOS 12 will likely focus on other underlying causes of such security issues on iOS software.
Apple was also caught intentionally limiting the battery power of older iPhone models
Recently, Apple also confirmed that it had intentionally been limiting the battery power on certain iPhone models in an effort to keep the devices from failing after extended use. Though Apple has offered those who own an iPhone 6 or older, battery replacements for $US29, improving battery performance will likely be another a major focus on iOS 12.
Apple reportedly had many feature updates planned for iOS 12, but it sounds like those features may not make it until 2019.
According to Axios, Apple has been working on updates to the iOS home screen and its in-car user interface known as CarPlay. The report also said Apple may overhaul vital stock apps such as Mail, as well as its photo capturing, editing and sharing features.
However, with Apple focusing on security and performance improvements, some of these features may not be available on iOS until 2019.
We’ll know more about iOS 12 in June.
Apple typically showcases its latest software during the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC), which takes place in June. Details about iOS 12 and its features will likely be revealed at that time.
