Apple has a smaller version of the iPad in one of its research labs, says plugged-in Apple blogger John Gruber. He revealed the little scoop on his podcast, and The Next Web picked up on the report:

“Well, I don’t know. What I do know is that they [Apple] have one in the lab…a 7.85 inch iPad that runs at 1024×768…it’s just like the regular iPad shrunk down a bit,” Gruber said. “I’ve heard from multiple people that this is something that they’re kind of noodling with.”

He says he hasn’t heard that Apple is actually going to release a smaller iPad.

He also said that if you want to see how big a 7.85-inch iPad looks, take a screen shot of the current iPad in portrait mode. Then look at that image rotated into landscape mode. That gives you an idea of how small it is.
