The TV rights to the English Premier League will be up for grabs before the end of the current season, and both Apple and Google want in, the Daily Mail reports. The Mail’s report is very thin. There’s no sourcing on it. It just says Apple and Google are interested.

Frankly, we’d be stunned if Apple jumped in, but it is reportedly looking at jumping into the television market. If it wants to make a big splash, this would be an interesting way to do it.

The EPL’s rights package will likely go for at least $1.6 billion (a billion pounds), and competitors to Apple and Google should include ESPN, Al Jazeera and English network Sky Sports. Sky and ESPN paid £1.782 billion in 2009 for the live UK rights from 2010-2013.
