Here’s an ominous note from Apple analyst Brian White of Topeka Capital. It seems to suggest Facebook is working on a smartphone, and Apple should be careful about letting it anywhere near iOS.
White has been in Taipei for the past week gathering intel on what’s happening in the mobile market:
Apple Must Know its Friends Well Before Allowing Them into its Circle of Trust. During Computex, our discussions at the show indicate that smartphone prototype work is being done by a well-known, non-hardware company with a goal of entering the market in 2013. We believe the hardware expertise for this new smartphone will come via a partnership strategy, rather than an acquisition or 100% internal development. Given the ever-changing mobile landscape, we believe Apple should keep a close eye on those companies it lets into its circle of trust, as was learned with keeping Eric Schmidt on the Apple board for too long. In Walter Isaacson’s book, Steve Jobs was quoted as saying, “I’m going to destroy Android, because it’s a stolen product. I’m willing to go to thermonuclear war on this.”
