The long-awaited first Battle Pass for 'Apex Legends' has finally arrived — here's how it works and what's in it

EA/Respawn EntertainmentThe first new character being added to ‘Apex Legends’ is named Octane. He arrives as part of the first Battle Pass on March 19.
  • Apex Legends” has been available for just over one month, and it’s already amassed over 50 million players across Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
  • The game is from the Battle Royale genre shared by other smash hits like “Fortnite” and “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.”
  • Since its explosive launch, fans have been clamoring for information of the upcoming Battle Pass, which enables players to earn “over 100” new items by completing objectives in the game.
  • On Tuesday, the first Battle Pass finally arrived. It’s named “Wild Frontier” and features a brand new character, named “Octane,” seen above.

Over 50 million players later and “Apex Legends” is just now getting its first Battle Pass – it costs 950 Apex Coins ($US9.50) and arrived on Tuesday across all platforms.

The Battle Pass is named “Wild Frontier,” and it arrives alongside a brand new character: Octane.

EA describes Octane as, “an adrenaline junkie with unmatched speed and self-heal and a Launch Pad Ability.”

Apex LegendsEA/Respawn EntertainmentApex Coins are the virtual currency in ‘Apex Legends.’ 1,000 coins is equal to $US10.

If you’re one of the millions of people coming to a Battle Royale game for the first time with “Apex Legends,” the Battle Pass concept may be new to you. But don’t worry: It’s easy to understand.

In short, a Battle Pass adds additional objectives to any given match that players can complete for to earn loot for their characters. Maybe you have to get 10 headshots in a certain part of the map, or collect all the level-two attachments for a specific weapon – and in exchange, the game rewards you with something.

Rather than having to complete objectives, like in “Fortnite,” the Battle Pass in “Apex Legends” is tied to the character levels you accrue from playing the game.

The first “Apex Legends” Battle Pass enables players to earn “over 100” new items by simply levelling up.

What kind of new items? “Legend skins, Apex Coins, a legendary Havoc skin and more,” an EA representative told Business Insider.

That’s particularly notable, as Apex Coins aren’t otherwise an earned currency in “Apex Legends.” But if you buy the first Battle Pass, you’ll earn Apex Coins that can presumably be used toward future Battle Pass purchases (or other Apex Coin-based purchases in the in-game store).

For players looking for a leg up on the Battle Pass objectives, EA is also offering a “Battle Pass Bundle.” It costs 2,800 Apex Coins ($US28) and automatically unlocks the first 25 levels (of 100).

Both the Battle Pass and the Battle Pass bundle are scheduled to go live on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC versions of “Apex Legends” on Tuesday at 1PM ET.

The game’s developer, Respawn Entertainment, published an FAQ as well:

How do I buy the Battle Pass?

The Battle Pass can only be purchased in the in-game store using Apex Coins. Launch Apex Legends, navigate to the Battle Pass tab, and purchase the Battle Pass from there. If you need to purchase Apex Coins, you can do that in the store, too.

What happens if I buy my Battle Pass late in the season?

You’ll receive all the rewards up to your Battle Pass level (which is your current level for the season) retroactively! For example, if you’re on level 20 for the season when you buy the Battle Pass, you’ll unlock all rewards for every level up to 20, plus three special Battle Pass skins.

If you buy the Battle Pass Bundle, you’ll get the rewards for 25 levels in addition to the levels you’ve already reached. So, if you’re on level 20 for the season when you buy the Battle Pass Bundle, you’ll get all the rewards through level 45 and the three special Battle Pass skins.

Can I keep levelling my Season 1 Battle Pass after the season ends?

No, the rewards available in the Season 1 Battle Pass can only be earned until the season is over. After it ends, you won’t be able to earn new Wild Frontier content.

Do I keep my stuff after the season ends?

Yes! You keep every Battle Pass reward you’ve unlocked after the season is over.

What if I don’t buy the Battle Pass? Can I still earn rewards for free?

Yes. Even if you don’t purchase the Battle Pass, you can still earn the following items for free:

-1 Wild Frontier Legend skin -5 Apex Packs -18 Wild Frontier stat trackers

If I buy the Battle Pass, can I also get the free rewards?

Yes! Everyone can earn the free rewards during Season 1.”
