As Germany looks to give up nuclear energy by 2022 one plucky artist is seeing a great opportunity.Anselm Kiefer told Der Spiegel that he plans to buy a disused nuclear power plant, turning it into a canvas for his work. In particular he is keen to obtain a cooling tower from a decommissioned plant, which he describes as something “stunning” to look at.

Reuters reports that Kiefer wrote to energy company RWE Power asking if he could take ownership of at least the cooling tower of a decommissioned plant. The company are yet to make a decision on whether it’ll allow Kiefer what he desires.

Kiefer is unsure what he will do with the cooling tower, but any work is likely to reflect German history. The 66-year-old artist is famed for his art depicting the Holocaust as well as using unusual materials in his work.
