Rovio just released a premiere gameplay trailer for Angry Birds Space, and it looks awesome. In the original Angry Birds games, you fire birds from a slingshot at standing structures in the original angry birds with the goal of toppling structures and destroying enemy pigs.
Angry Birds Space takes it to another level, thanks to new gameplay based around gravity.
Rovio hasn’t done much to change the gameplay since the original launch in 2009. This is the largest change Rovio has ever made to its titles, and it’s an exciting and fresh take that looks like it will be a lot of fun.
The game will have little planetoids and asteroids that have their own field of gravity, which will bend the trajectory of your bird.
Your goal is no longer to topple a structure, but to strategically fire your bird so it wipes out all the enemy pigs on the screen.
You can do that, for example, by popping their space suits and making them freeze. Or you can destroy a rope that’s keeping them in orbit, which sends them tumbling down into a planet below and disappearing in a poof of smoke.
The puzzles look like they will go from cute and simple to mind-bending levels that involve complicated physics elements and new bird types — like one that can change direction on cue.
Angry Birds games are known for being popular and high-quality: two of the top 10 paid games in the Apple App Store are Angry Birds titles. Angry Birds games usually rank very highly on the list.
The company released the official gameplay trailer in conjunction with NASA, with a demonstration of how it would work in the real world by shipping Angry Birds plushies to the International Space Station.
We’ve included the full video below, which you absolutely have to watch. The gameplay demo starts around 3 minutes in.
The game comes out on March 22. Seriously, get excited.
