It seems every Heisman Trophy winner has a “Heisman moment.” For Cam Newton it was his 49-yard run against LSU in which he seemingly broke 86 tackles and broke another 42 ankles. For Desmond Howard it was the Heisman pose against Ohio State in 1991. And for Gino Torretta it was…well, it was when Howard decided to go pro after his junior year.
The odds-on favourite to win this year’s Heisman is Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck. And he may have had his Heisman moment late Saturday night against UCLA when he made a one-handed, toe-tapping sideline catch.
You read that correctly, CATCH. As in somebody else threw the ball.
Heisman voters love big names, with big numbers, magical moments, and versatility. Luck put all of those on display on Saturday night. And while there is still a lot of football to play, and plenty of other Heisman candidates, Luck inched a little closer to the Heisman podium on Saturday night.
