Is the age of the celebrity coming to an end?
Of course not. But celebrity magazines are struggling just a bit.
Keith Kelly reports on the fortunes of the rags. He hears tales of a “15% decline across the board” (words courtesy of Star and OK! owner David Leckey).
Both subscription numbers and single copies sales are down over the first six months of 2011, and publishers are slashing prices, offering cheap subs, and doing pretty much anything else they can think of to get readers.
No one seems to have any explanation for why the category is struggling, but it probably has to do with the overwhelming amount of choices. Between People, Star, OK!, In Touch, Life & Style, Us Weekly, and the rest, it’s just a lot. One can only spend so much time reading on the beach, you know?
