Amazon Is Developing A Smartphone To Go After The iPhone

Amazon working with Foxconn to develop a smartphone that would compete with the iPhone and Android devices, Bloomberg reports.Citi analyst Mark Mahaney first said Amazon was working on a smartphone in an analyst note last November.

Amazon is also looking to protect its smartphone by acquiring patents that protect it from “allegations of infringement,” according to unnamed sources in Bloomberg’s report.

Amazon acquired UpNext, a 3D mapping developer, earlier this month. It could apply those maps to its Kindle Fire tablet, but maps applications typically get more mileage out of smartphones.
