Amazon looks set to open in Australia this week.
The US online giant could be trading withing 48 hours with the Amazon Marketplace team sending an email to sellers on Tuesday afternoon saying they will begin a testing phase on Thursday, signing off with “Let’s make history!”.
Lifehacker.com.au reports the email was sent to select Amazon Marketplace sellers that they need to be reading by 2pm AEDT, this Thursday, November 23, to receive orders.
The email says sellers should “prepare for the launch of the Amazon Marketplace in Australia” and the company “will start an internal testing phase with a small number of customers” at that point.
“As your products will be able to be purchased, please make sure your pricing and stock is up-to-date,” the Amazon Marketplace team’s email says.
The initial roll-out means the Amazon Australia could be ready for November 24, the massive US sales day known as Black Friday.
The sellers need to pass Seller Identity Verification to be part of the testing phase and “should be prepared to receive orders from this point onward” and having their pricing and stock ready.
Anyone who doesn’t want to be part of the testing phase can make their account inactive.
Australian third party merchants pay $49.95 plus GST monthly to sell on Amazon, plus 6% to 15% commission on products to the world’s largest internet company by revenue.
Lifehacker says it not known how many sellers or customers will be part of the testing phase, but in recent days it’s been clear that the Australian website is being populated with products from leading brands such as Dyson, Sunbeam and Huawei, including toasters, electric blankets and smartwatches.
Products from the AmazonBasics white-label range as well as HP computer products have also appeared briefly before the pages were hidden again. All those item pages have now also been removed from public view.
The company’s fulfillment centre in Dandenong South in outer Melbourne has been preparing with staff on since since last month.
