Amazon already has 500 local businesses ready to sell when it launches in Australia

Amazon has revealed more than 500 local businesses have already registered to sell on its marketplace when the local platform goes live in Australia.

But the internet commerce giant is seeking more, announcing Friday that the first-ever Amazon Marketplace Seller Summit in Australia would be held in Sydney on November 13. The free event will show local merchants how they can use Amazon Australia’s Marketplace to set up and grow an online business.

The summit is running with the blessing of the local retail industry, with the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) and the SME Association of Australia (SMEA) partnering with Amazon.

“The reality is that there’s a lot of education that needs to happen amongst the small business community when it comes to being digitally savvy and using the right tools to take their business to the next level,” said SMEA board member Mark Flack.

Globally Amazon Marketplace – a platform for third party merchants – contribute the majority of sales on Amazon, as opposed to orders fulfilled directly by Amazon.

Business Insider revealed in July that Amazon Australia, after much speculation, was opening its first warehouse in eastern Melbourne. The company still has not announced when the Australian arm would start operating.

Adam Mills, co-founder of Queensland tech startup KoalaSafe, will be speaking at the summit. His company has seen success in the US selling its child-safe internet monitoring device online, with it eventually resulting in a physical sales deal with retail chain Target this year.

“For those who are selling physical products, Amazon provides a great opportunity to get these products in front of customers and we encourage businesses to take full advantage,” said Mills.

Amazon Australia country manager Rocco Braeuniger and head of Amazon Marketplace in Australia, Fabio Bertola, will also present at the half-day conference, in front of an audience of both retailers and “aspiring entrepreneurs”.

Braeuniger said the internet has the power to “level the playing field between big and small businesses” to allow Australian merchants to reach markets they’d not thought of before.

“We look forward to enabling local businesses to make their products available to a wide audience, not only in Australia, but also worldwide.”

ARA executive director Russell Zimmerman said its members are excited about the event and the arrival of Amazon’s new Australian division.

“We believe that Amazon’s arrival brings new possibilities to Australian retailers, small and large. We are pleased to work alongside Amazon to bring the Seller Summit to Sydney so that businesses and retailers alike can receive practical advice and guidance on how to make the most of Amazon Marketplace.”
