[UPDATE]: Algerian Runner Thrown Out Of Olympics For 'Not Trying' After He Intentionally Tanks In The Dumbest Way Possible

Algerian runner Taoufik Makhloufi has been expelled from the Games for “not trying” in a 800-meter heat this morning.

Makhloufi was not a threat to medal in the event, but was a favourite in the 1,500 meter event. Makhloufi had already advanced to the final of the 1,500 after winning his semifinal, and apparently wanted to conserve energy by intentionally failing to advance in the 800-meter event.

According to Reuters, Algerian officials did not pull Makhloufi from the 800-meter heat before a set deadline, meaning he was required to run the heat — but instead of coasting to a slow time, Makhloufi stopped in the middle of the race and didn’t even finish.

Here he is before the race started, looking confident.

Makhloufi didn’t even make it through the first turn without falling off the pace.

When Makhloufi got 3/4 of the way through his first lap, he just stopped running. Here you can see him cheering the rest of the field on as they reach the final stretch.

Makhloufi officially got a DNF for his race.

The International Association of Athletics Federations was not happy with Makhloufi’s stunt, and have thrown him out of the Olympics altogether.

This is the second huge disqualification of the 2012 Summer Olympics over an athlete or team improving their fortune by intentionally tanking. Note to Olympians: If you’re going to tank, at least do it convincingly.

UPDATE: Makhloufi has been re-instated after a doctor was somehow able to excuse his performance
