At Bronx Pride on Sunday, Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez gave “the most BX pride speech” about LGBTQ policies in “a post-marriage equality world” punctuated by the ubiquitous hip-hop air horn sound effect.

“Pride is about honouring the community workers, the people who work in the clinics, the community organisers, the people who work with LGBT youth, the people who are fighting to make sure it’s not just about marriage equality but about quality of life for all people in the community, everybody,” Ocasio-Cortez said to the crowd, as a stray air horn let loose.

After each policy Ocasio-Cortez named, another air horn rang out. Her points included making PrEP, the drug used to reduce the risk of contracting HIV via sex, “free for all people.” Ocasio-Cortez confronted drug manufacturing company Gilead’s CEO about the high cost of PrEP in May. In the US, the drug costs around $US2,000 for a 30 day supply.

Ocasio-Cortez’s other points were “tackling the homelessness crisis among our LGBTQ youth,” “decarcerating our society so that no trans woman and no person ever dies again in custody” and “making sure that no one is denied a job because of their gender identity, no matter what it is.”

LGBTQ young adults have a 120 per cent higher risk of reporting homelessness compared to heterosexual and cisgender youth. Ocasio-Cortez may also have been referring to high-profile incidents of transgender women dying in custody along with the more than one in four transgender people who have lost a job due to bias.
