A unknown substance has been found in package in a Canberra mail centre

Authorities have isolated a building at the Fyshwick Mail Centre in Canberra after an unknown substance was found in a package.

A state police spokesperson told Business Insider: “ACT police responding to a hazardous incident in Fyshwick. Police and HAZMAT services have attended to remove an item as a standard safety precaution.”

Five people may have been exposed to the unknown substance, while more than 100 people have been quarantined.

No one is yet showing any symptoms of ill health.

Emergency authorities and HAZMAT specialists have arrived at the scene on Canberra Avenue.

Testing of the substance is believed to be underway.
