John Goodman, the mogul who founded the International Polo Club in tony Palm Beach, has come up with a novel way to protect his fortune from a lawsuit stemming from a fatal DUI accident a few years back. He’s officially adopted his 42-year-old girlfriend as his daughter, a move that entitles her to one-third of the trust he set up for his two biological children, the New York Daily News reports. And since she’s of age, she has immediate access to the funds.
Goodman is being sued by the parents of Scott Patrick Wilson, who was killed when Goodman ran a stop sign while driving his Bentley convertible under the influence in 2010, according to police reports, the Palm Beach Post wrote.
The adoption, while unconventional (to say the least), is apparently perfectly legal, and perhaps a shrewd move by Goodman. A judge ruled earlier that the mogul’s two biological children could not be considered part of his financial worth. And by that logic, now his girlfriend’s portion of the trust can’t be considered his, either.
