50 SHADES OF GREY: Here Are Our Casting Suggestions For The Entire Film

Photo: AP Images

Last month, we scoured the Internet to bring you the best and worst casting ideas for the leads in the upcoming film adaptation of 50 Shades of Grey. The sexually explicit novel from E.L. James has been on The New York Times best-sellers list for 13 weeks and counting. For those of you who are at a loss with the phenomenon, catch up here

Due to such an overwhelming response from readers, we thought we’d extend our knowledge and offer up more casting suggestions.

See who’s hot and who’s not for the 50 Shades crew>
We’ve taken readers’ recommendations, those from around the internet, plus a few of our own in-house ideas to narrow down candidates for pertinent roles throughout the series.

From tenacious, headstrong aspiring journalist Kate, to overcharged, rambunctious but adorable Mia, sister of billionaire Christian, we’ve speculated on roles of the younger crew. We’ve even thrown in selections for José (the Taylor Lautner of the series). How’s James Marsden sound? You know, since he never gets the girl. Kidding.

We didn’t go crazy casting everyone. No Mrs. Jones, no Taylor and we’re not casting Paul from the hardware store.

And, sorry fans, we’re not offering picks on Jack Hyde, the villain of book three … yet. However, we couldn’t help but whip up a few ideas for the dastardly Mrs. Robinson.

We’ll give you the good, the bad and the winning actors for each character. If we’re missing anyone, let us know.

Ready for round two? Let’s begin.

Mrs. Robinson (Elena Lincoln)—Good Ideas: Michelle Pfeiffer, Sharon Stone, Charlize Theron

Michelle Pfeiffer
Tight black leather? Whip? Been there. Done that. Catwoman role aside--Pfeiffer would have the BDSM frame of mind. Despite her killer looks and versatile personality ('White Oleander'), we doubt she'd be up for the role since overly the actress has previously turned down more sexy, scandalous roles including Sharon Stone's role in 'Basic Instinct' opting for more dramatic films, 'I am Sam.'

Sharon Stone
Stone oozes sex onscreen. 'Basic Instinct.' 'Casino.' You get the picture. Stone has no problem playing a manipulative maniacal, sex-crazed dominatrix; however, her overpowering sex appeal could never allow us to believe Stone only wants the best for Christian after acting as his dominant all those years. Then again, are we supposed to really buy that act in the book?

Charlize Theron
Sexy? Yeah, Theron's had her share of steamy sex scenes ('The Devil's Advocate,' 'Monster's Ball'). And, the multi-faceted actress can handle 50 shades of twisted, from cold, calm, controlling Meredith Vickers in upcoming 'Prometheus' to evil witch in 'Snow White and the Huntsman.' Theron may be slightly too youthful for the role of Lincoln. Plus, the film may be a little subpar for an Oscar winner.

Mrs. Robinson—Bad Idea: Heather Locklear

We don't believe anyone has tossed this idea around; however, in case anyone gets the thought in their head, we want to crush it immediately.

Locklear was the Susan Lucci of primetime TV. The actress was sexy and conniving in her 'Melrose Place' days ... and then box-office bomb 'The Perfect Man' happened. Turn. Off.

Mrs. Robinson—Winner: Ellen Barkin

She may be 58, but … Barkin's kicking it.

The actress has played a list of seductive women including a murderous temptress in 'Sea of Love.' She also heated up the big screen with Dennis Quaid in 'The Big Easy.'

Don't worry, Barkin has enough bite to back up the sexual front as well.

Move aside Grey, the actress dabbled with a real-life billionaire--she was married to Revlon chairman Ronald O. Perelman for six years.

After their divorce she reportedly received a paltry $20 million of Perelman's estimated $12 billion. Barkin auctioned all of the jewelry from her husband for another cool $20.3 million. Yeah. She's bold.

Did we also mention Barkin's from the Bronx?

Oh and apparently the actress also keeps a collection of scented candles in her West Village town house, bringing images of the red room of pain to mind.

Plus, she already rocks a short blonde bob similar to how we'd imagine Mrs. Robinson. All you really need to do is look at her, and you can't deny.

Oh, yes, we can see Barkin straightening Christian out.

Kate Kavanagh—Good Idea: Blake Lively

It took us a while to warm up to the idea of Lively as Kate, but the more the idea was planted in our head, the more it became believable. We thought just because the actress is a 'Gossip Girl'--perfect for the overly 'chatty Kathy'--didn't mean she was perfect for the role. However, Since Kavanagh comes from a wealthy background, much like Lively's 'Gossip Girl' character, she'd have much material to draw from for the part.

Kate Kavanagh—Bad Ideas: Alison Brie, Mia Wasikowska, Leven Rambin

Alison Brie
The 'Community' actress' name has been thrown around; however, Brie's slightly too perky and cheery for such a stern role. Kate's character need more of an assertive backbone, she's not giggling every five seconds like a giddy school girl.

Instead, we see the bubbly Brie as a better fit for another character …

Mia Wasikowska
No. 'The Kids are All Right' and 'Alice in Wonderland' actress does not have the tenacity or gall of a cutthroat journalist, let alone play a gossipy yuppie sidekick to Anastasia. In our eyes, Wasikowska is a leading lady, far too serious to play a role in the Grey series.

Leven Rambin
Fans and sites combined have suggested Rambin would make a great Kate after her fierce performance in 'The Hunger Games.' However, her attempt at demonstrating a frustrated attitude comes across as more whiny than severely domineering. What Rambin does succeed at is playing difficult parts, such as that of autistic Lily Montgomery which she mastered on 'All My Children.'

Kate Kavanagh—Winner: Amber Heard

Heard was the most memorable part of NBC's failed 'Playboy Club.' Undeniably, she has the killer looks to stop any man in his tracks, precisely one of the traits needed to successfully play the role of Kate Kavanagh. Looks aside, the confident, headstrong actress of 'Zombieland,'--she was the zombie attempting to eat Jesse Eisenberg's face--'Pineapple Express' and 'Never Back Down' could bat her eyelashes one moment to get what she wants and be the mischievous friend stealing Ana away for late night drinks against Christian's wishes. Yes, she exudes all of the qualities of the unwavering Miss Kavanagh.

Also, we could easily imagine Heard strutting around in her pink flannel bunny pajamas with or without those Playboy bunny ears.

For those worried about Kate's strawberry blond locks, that's nothing some hair dye couldn't fix.

Mia Grey—Good ideas: Emilia Clarke, Bella Heathcote, Alison Brie

Emilia Clarke
The 'Game of Thrones' actress certainly looks the part (yes, that's Daenerys); however, her role on the hit HBO series suggests she may be a little too sensual and hardcore for Christian's 'angelic' little sis. She's also been linked to the lead of Anastasia, an idea we're more privy to accept.

Bella Heathcote
This girl emanates adorable chic. Cue the full pouty lips to get her way with older brother Christian and big bright eyes. OK, she has the looks, but has she got the acting chops? Sure! The Australian actress hasn't been in much yet ('Dark Shadows,' 'In Time'); however, she's set to lead in 'Not Fade Away' featuring James Gandolfini and Brad Garrett. this girl's going places.

Alison Brie
We have no doubt the 'Community' actress could nail Mia's overzealous level of endless energy. We could also easily see her thoughtlessly interrupting Ana and Christian while hot and heavy.

Brie comes off as the Energizer Bunny of hyperactivity … which could be perfect for Christian's little sis; however, it could become easily annoying on screen. Imagine a child downing 10 giant Pixy Stix before being let loose on a theme park. Say hello to Brie as Mia.

However, if they bring on Brie, they could get her new real-life beau, Dave Franco on board for boyfriend Ethan.

Mia Grey—Bad Ideas: Emmy Rossum and Carey Mulligan

Emmy Rossum
We love Rossum. However, from the looks of her edgy role in 'Shameless,' she'd be too much spice and not enough sugar for the role of Mia.

Carey Mulligan
Mulligan's name has been thrown around. Personally, we're not sure if she has enough energy as much as the competition to carry Mia's effervescent attitude--she was so mellowed out in 'Drive.' Her roles lead lead to more DIDs (damsels in distress) syndrome than independent girl power ('Shame' and upcoming 'The Great Gatsby').

Mia Grey—Winner: Lucy Hale

'The Pretty Little Liars' actress appears innocent-looking enough to hide an obvious promiscuity. It's easy to imagine her big bright eyes lighting up over the simplest of things when it comes to planning Christian and Ana's wedding and shopping. Her ability to change from sweet and innocent one moment to extremely persuasive the next with a searing look makes her a high contender on our list. She's also played a number of rich, spoiled girls ('Sorority Wars,' 'Privileged').

Ethan Kavanagh—Good Ideas: Dave Franco and Garrett Hedlund

Dave Franco
Who says his older brother James is the only one who can act? We're branching out from the mainstream heartthrobs to raise a candle to the younger brother of James Franco, David. The younger sibling plays the tired bully in film after film ('21 Jump Street,' 'Superbad'). However, his clean-cut baby face could easily make for a dashing Kavanagh. And, more than dashing, we need an actor who can pull off the reserved look when Mia's all but ready to pounce on him. Franco can do both.

Still not sold he would fit in the series? He went out for the role of Edward Cullen in 'Twilight.'

Garrett Hedlund
The 'Tron: Legacy' actor not only has the look of Kavagnah's flawless brother; however, he has the unique ability to say 1000 words with one paralyzing look from his piercing blue eyes. Not many actors can do that. And, from the looks of it, Mia and Ethan give off more body language than actual onscreen action.

Ethan Kavanagh—Terrible Ideas: Scott Porter and Max Irons

Scott Porter
We grew tired of Porter's coaching routine by the end of 'Friday Night Lights.' As his role slowly fizzled out of the show, he lost his spark for us. If we're going to have someone in Ethan's role, it has to be an up-and-comer with At 32, Porter seems to have missed the age mark to play the young Ethan. There are plenty of fresh actors to take over the role.

Max Irons
We don't even get these rumours since we couldn't take 'Red Riding Hood' seriously. Irons is set to star in Stephanie Meyer's ('Twilight') next film adaptation, 'The Host.' If anything, he looks like a younger version of Jasper from Meyer's vampire series. Pass.

Ethan Kavanagh—Winner: Jeremy Irvine

Others have suggested Irvine for the role of Christian's older brother, Elliot; however, we think the young English actor is better suited for the role of Ethan. For one, he looks the part--the dirty blond hair (he's gone back and forth between that and a chestnut) and the overwhelming boyish innocence when Mia enters a room. With a role in Steven Spielberg's Oscar-nominated film 'War Horse,' Irvine would be a steal for the film.

Elliot Grey—Good Ideas: Colin Egglesfield, Alex Pettyfer and David Gregory

Colin Egglesfield
Currently, Egglesfield plays Evan, the Superman brother-in-law of Jennifer Love-Hewitt's character on 'The Client List.' However, before he was a charmer on Lifetime's Sunday night hit, the actor has a rich history on 'All My Children' playing a con-man turned sweetheart (naturally) before he was phased out of the show by going crazy., His past of moving from one bed to the next on the ABC soap mixed with his playful hijinks on red carpet make him a natural Elliot. We wouldn't be upset with Egglesfield playing Christian's brother.

David Gregory
You've probably never heard of Gregory unless you're familiar with soap opera 'One Life to Live.' We mention him because his role on the former soap opera saw him transform from a casanova in the bedroom, literally landing every lady in the town of Llanview to a huge softie after becoming a parent. Only problem is he's a little young looking. He may almost be better for the role of Ethan.

Alex Pettyfer
Many people suggested Pettyfer for the role of Christian; however, we could easily see the actor encompass the wise-cracking, innuendo offering, sex-crazed Elliot Grey. Pettyfer stars in this summer's upcoming stopper film, 'Magic Mike' so we know he's not shy to take it off. However, another actor beat him outright humour department.

Elliot Grey—Bad Ideas: Ryan Kwanten, Chris Hemsworth, Taylor Kitsch

Ryan Kwanten
The 'True Blood' star is always sought out as the go-to for the ultimate cad. We already have our sights on him for the role of Finnick in the next 'Hunger Games' flick. Sorry ladies, that role was written for Kwanten.

Chris Hemsworth
We're just going to leave this one alone. Hemsworth already has god-like status as Thor. With 'The Avengers 2' in sight, why would he return to the world of mere mortals?

Taylor Kitsch
The Web is delivering some really uninspiring offerings for the role of Christian's casanova brother. Is this because the 'Friday Night Lights' bad boy slightly resembles Ian Somerhalder in some alternate universe? Let's be honest, he never exactly plays the guy who's openly pursuing all the hotties. People have also suggested him for the role of Ethan. Also, for the moment, he seems to be a bad luck charm for potential Hollywood blockbusters.

Elliot Grey—Winner: Matt Bomer

This was a tough decision. However, the chiseled face of 'White Collar' is the perfect mix between serious and sarcastic brute for Christian's older brother Elliot.

Bomer's already mastered playing an actual thief on his USA hit, so stealing the hearts of nearly every woman in Seattle should be a since. He's also hilarious, which is good since Elliot comes off as a huge goofball. Bomer would inject the lighthearted comedy necessary to offset all of the interminable heated onscreen moments. It's also slightly amusing his girlfriend on the show was named Kate. We're going to stop. Just look at the evidence.

José Rodriguez—Good Ideas: Jason Tam and Mark Salling

Jason Tam
'One Life to Live' veteran, Jason Tam will most likely get overlooked; however, he should be a frontrunner for Anastasia's best friend. He was the boyfriend who had his heart stomped on by a cheating girlfriend on the long-running soap opera. If Taylor Lautner needed a backup in 'Twilight,' Tam would definitely serve as a fill-in.

Currently, Tam's involved with Broadway, working on Peter Gabriel's 'Us,' but we'd enjoy seeing him on the big screen. Take a look at his audition for the Broadway revival of 'A Chorus Line' that choked up Director Bob Avian.

Mark Salling
The down-to-earth Salling from 'Glee' would have no problem trying to charm the heels off of Ana. However, we couldn't see him pining over his best friend with huge puppy dog eyes. The downside to this casting bit would be that he doesn't look Hispanic at all, and he'd have to grow out his hair.

José Rodriguez—Bad Idea: Michael Trevino

Yes. Fans requested 'The Vampire Diaries' star. We already want Somerhalder as Christian and have passed on his real-life girlfriend, Nina Dobrev, for Ana. We're going to pass.

José Rodriguez—Winner: Steven Straight

Straight may not be Hispanic, but his charming, amiable demeanor makes him a solid pick for Ana's best friend photographer. The actor currently stars in Starz original series 'Magic City.' Though he looks like a good boy, the suave Straight could easily put Ana in an uncomfortable lip-locking bind.

Again, here are our winners:

Mrs. Robinson: Ellen Barkin
Elliot Grey: Matt Bomer
Katherine Kavanagh: Amber Heard
Jose Rodriguez: Steven Straight
Mia Grey: Lucy Hale
Ethan Kavanagh: Jeremy Irvine
